I visited Casa de la Abuela in Suchitoto, El Salvador, last week, and what began as a simple visit quickly turned into one of the most memorable experiences of our trip.

We were warmly hosted by Pepe, the proprietor, and almost immediately, we felt like old friends. Pepe is not simply a barista; he is a true master of his craft. His coffee menu is extensive, intriguing, and wonderfully seductive. Every cup was an experience of its own, with carefully chosen brewing techniques that brought out incredible depth, aroma, and flavor. The coffee was, quite simply, exceptional.

What made it even more special was Pepe himself. He took the time to guide us through his world of coffee, sharing his knowledge and passion with such enthusiasm that we couldn’t help but become completely immersed in it. There was something almost magical about watching him work and then tasting the result.

Later that evening, we met again for the pupusa workshop, and once again, Pepe managed to turn something seemingly simple into an unforgettable experience. We learned not only the art and technique behind making the perfect pupusa, but also the fascinating history and traditions surrounding this beloved Salvadoran delicacy.

For me, it was far more than a culinary class; it was a journey through Salvadoran culture, told through food, stories, and Pepe’s infectious passion. I thoroughly enjoyed every story, every lesson, and, of course, the delicious pupusas I proudly prepared myself.

Casa de la Abuela is more than a place to have coffee or learn to make pupusas. It is an experience; a place where flavor, culture, history, and genuine hospitality come together beautifully. And Pepe is the kind of host who leaves an impression long after you have walked out the door.

If you visit Suchitoto, do yourself a favor: sit down, slow down, let Pepe make you a coffee, and enjoy the experience. You won’t regret it.

Authentic natural and cultural experience in Suchitoto. Loved the hike around Los Tercios Waterfalls. The birding by boat on Lake Suchitlan was absolutely superb! The coffee and giftshop at Casa de la Abuela are truly outstanding! And don’t miss their Pupusa Workshop! Loved the food and drinks at the local pubs and restaurants.

We came away with a much deeper understanding of El Salvador’s history, culture, and people. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a meaningful experience beyond the usual tourist attractions.
