CINQUERA
The Guerrilla Trail – Civil War Hike & Waterfall Adventure
Walk through history. Hike through nature. Discover the untold story of El Salvador.
From 1980 to 1992, El Salvador experienced a devastating civil war between the government and the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberacion Nacional (FMLN).
The conflict claimed more than 75,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Today, former battlegrounds like CINQUERA have become places of remembrance, where visitors can learn about the country’s history.
Explore the hidden mountain Guerrilla trails that once sheltered guerrilla fighters during the Salvadoran Civil War, surrounded by one of the country’s most spectacular subtropical forest. This unforgettable experience combines history, breathtaking scenery, and adventure, ending with a refreshing swim beneath a beautiful waterfall.

Highlights
• Visit CINQUERA, the town where the Salvadoran Civil War intensified during the 1980s. Once a guerrilla stronghold, it endured daily bombings for over 12 years.
• Explore the second-largest protected natural reserve in El Salvador while hiking nearly 4 km along the historic Guerrilla Trail.
• Meet a Civil War veteran and one of the founders of the Salvadoran guerrilla movement (subject to availability).
• Discover authentic guerrilla campsites, defensive trenches, a Vietnamese-style jungle kitchen, a field hospital, and a fire observation tower with spectacular views over northern El Salvador and Lake Suchitlán.
• Cool off with a swim in the natural pool at El Salto Waterfall.
• Finish the experience with a walking tour through the charming town of Cinquera, including its unique central plaza, Civil War memorial, and local history.

An unforgettable and deeply enriching experience! The tour brought El Salvador’s history and culture to life through the personal story of a former guerrilla fighter, offering an authentic perspective on the civil war and its impact on the people. Our guide was friendly, professional, and extremely knowledgeable, making the walk, waterfall, and town visit both enjoyable and informative. We came away with a much deeper understanding of El Salvador’s history, culture, and people. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a meaningful experience beyond the usual tourist attractions.

A wonderful morning that was highly educational. Learning h about the civil war from a former guerrilla fighter brought the conflict alive. Our guide for the walk and waterfall and town was also very clear and friendly. I felt I learned so much from them both. Great experience.
